CONSULTING EXPERIENCE
John has served as a management consultant and trusted advisor to CEOs and their leadership teams, as well as Boards of Directors, for over 25 years. During this time, John served as a partner at Booz, Allen & Hamilton; a principal at Sibson & Company; and a consultant at Hewitt Associates.
John's areas of expertise include: developing and deploying enterprise strategy; aligning the organization and leadership team to execute strategy; improving the quality and clarity of decision processes; defining performance expectations and measuring performance; and strengthening corporate culture.
John's clients have included Mayo Clinic, Trizec Properties, May Department Stores, Sears Roebuck & Co., Stanford University Medical Center, Winston & Strawn, Taubman Realty, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Premark, LaSalle Investment Management, Follett Corporation, Earthgrains, Allstate Insurance, Los Alamos National Laboratories, Pillsbury, Ceridian Corporation, and Hewlett-Packard.
LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE
John served as Chairman of the Board of IMCO Recycling from April through December of 2004. He was a principal participant in negotiating and closing a merger between IMCO and Commonwealth Industries. The merged company, Aleris International Inc., is a vertically integrated aluminum recycler and common-alloy sheet manufacturer with $3 billion in annual sales and 29 production facilities worldwide. John serves as an independent director, member of the Audit Committee, and chairman of the Compensation Committee.
From the fall of 2000 to the fall of 2003, John served as the president of St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, an institution noted for its classical curriculum based upon the Great Books and its teaching method based upon the Socratic method and the skill of dialogue. Prior to becoming president, he served on the College's board of visitors and governors for five years.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
John earned his MBA in finance and economics at the University of Chicago, as well as his AB cum laude in philosophy at Princeton University. More recently, John earned an MA in liberal arts at St. John's College, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
A PERSONAL NOTE
John is an avid reader of the Great Books, a seminar leader for the Tecolote Group, a teacher development program at St. John's College, a member of the board of trustees of the Music Institute of Chicago, and capital campaign advisor to Monte del Sol Charter School in Santa Fe. He has been married to his high school sweetheart for thirty-seven years. His two daughters are grown; one lives in Boston and the other lives in Santa Fe.
